2019: The year in figures and charts
Telling the story of the last 12 months through data.
Who needs Netflix when you’ve got real-life politics?
In 2019, two political sagas that took up much of our time last year continued into yet another season: Britain’s crusade to leave the European Union and Donald Trump’s presidency.
New storylines emerged as well. We obsessed about trade wars and data privacy, elections and gender equality. Thousands protested against corruption, violence and the political establishment across the globe, including in Hong Kong, Catalonia, Chile and France. Efforts to combat climate change took center stage — even as countries fell short of ambitious rhetoric and fossil fuel reduction targets.
Here are the figures behind the topics that defined 2019.
