Brussels no longer expects Brexit deal ahead of Thursday’s summit

The EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier won’t brief EU ambassadors on the state of play of the Brexit negotiations before Thursday’s EU leaders’ summit, two EU officials said.

EU ambassadors had originally penciled in a briefing from Barnier at their meeting on Wednesday, as Brussels hoped to clinch a Brexit deal ahead of the virtual leaders meeting on Thursday (even though Brexit is not formally on the agenda). Stretching the deadline until after this week makes ratification of the deal for Brussels even harder, EU officials previously stressed.
