LONDON — U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Boris Johnson on his victory in the U.K. general election, saying the result opens the door to a “far bigger” trade deal between the two nations.
In a tweet in the early hours of Friday, Trump said Johnson’s majority was a “great WIN!”
The Conservatives have won 361 of the 650 seats of the British parliament, with five seats still to be declared. It was a disappointing night for the Labour Party, which has so far claimed 203 seats, its worst result in three decades.
“Britain and the United States will now be free to strike a massive new Trade Deal after BREXIT,” Trump wrote. “This deal has the potential to be far bigger and more lucrative than any deal that could be made with the EU. Celebrate Boris!”
