EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier struck an optimistic tone shortly after briefing EU ambassadors on progress in Brexit talks Monday.
“It is our responsibility to give the talks every chance of success,” Barnier tweeted. “Never before has such a comprehensive agreement been negotiated so transparently and in such little time,” he added. “Fair competition, and a sustainable solution for our fishermen and women, are key to reaching a deal.”
Earlier, Barnier had made similar statements to reporters where he called for “calm and respect,” echoing the words of Council President Charles Michel’s call this weekend for cool heads following media reports the U.K. could deploy Royal Navy vessels to patrol British waters if there’s no Brexit deal.
“I won’t say like Donald Trump that our shi
