UK Treasury was against hosting COP26, says former minister

A former U.K. government minister who was once set to lead the COP26 climate talks said early preparations for the summit were hampered by Whitehall infighting.

Civil servants in the Treasury and business departments “adamantly did not want to host the COP,” Claire O’Neill, who stood down from parliament at the 2019 election, told a committee of MPs on Tuesday.

Officials raised concerns about the capacity of the government to deliver a successful conference, she said, unfavorably comparing the resources allotted to Brexit with the early preparations for the most important U.N. climate talks since Paris in 2015.
